The Grenadines & Kite Spots
Union Island is a practical base for exploring the kite spots and island experiences of the Southern Grenadines.
One base, several island experiences
From Union Island, guests can request access to a range of riding areas and island excursions depending on wind, weather, skill level, safety, permissions, and boat availability.
Main areas to describe
Kite Beach / Union Island
The main Union Island kite area offers flat, colorful water and is close to Clifton, restaurants, and island services. It is suited to organized lessons and confident independent riders, depending on conditions.
Important safety note: total beginners should not attempt to launch or ride independently. They should request lessons.
Frigate / Ashton Lagoon
A flat-water area on Union Island that can be used for downwinders, foiling, and coached sessions when conditions and safety support are suitable. Offshore wind can require boat safety.
Big Sand
A Union Island beach option with small waves and scenic water. Conditions vary, and launch access can be limited.
Mayreau
A nearby island known for beautiful scenery, beaches, and Salt Whistle Bay. Some areas have restrictions, and guests must respect local rules and launch zones.
Tobago Cays
A famous Grenadines marine-park experience with turquoise water, turtles, snorkeling, and a dramatic island setting. Kiting has restrictions, and guests must follow ranger rules and launch limitations.
Palm Island
Palm Island can offer advanced wave and reef riding in suitable conditions. It is not for beginners. Access and resort status must be confirmed before planning around it.
Morpion
A tiny sand island surrounded by shallow reef. It is mainly a scenic excursion and snorkeling stop. Kiting can be limited and should be approached carefully with respect for other visitors and conditions.
Skill-level guidance
Beginners
Book lessons and follow the instructor’s spot choice. Do not try to self-launch on unfamiliar beaches.
Intermediate riders
Request advice before riding new spots. Some areas require upwind ability, spot knowledge, and boat safety.
Advanced riders
Ask about conditions for waves, downwinders, foiling, and more exposed spots. Some areas have reef, restrictions, offshore wind, or launch complications.
Rules and respect
The Grenadines are beautiful because they are sensitive, local, and regulated in some places. Guests must respect:
- Marine-park rules.
- Launch restrictions.
- Swimmers and anchored boats.
- Local rangers and operators.
- Reef and turtle areas.
- Weather and safety decisions.
